About Morogoro Region
Introduction:
When Tanganyika gained its independence on December 9, 1961, Morogoro Region was part of the Eastern Province. The province included the present regions of Dar es Salaam, Pwani and Morogoro.
The State Headquarters was in Morogoro city where the Head of State also housed his office there. The first African MP to lead the State was the late Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere.
Morogoro Region officially started in 1962 with three Districts namely Morogoro Kilosa and Ulanga. It is the second largest region in the country currently preceded by Tabora Region.
Boundaries and sizes of the Region
Morogoro Region is the second largest region in the country after Tabora Region. The province has an area of 73,039 square kilometers. This area is equivalent to 7.7 percent of the total area of Mainland Tanzania, out of this area 2,240 Km2 is the water area. The region is bordered by the Coast and Lindi Regions on the East, Manyara and Tanga on the North and on the West by the Dodoma and Iringa Regions and on the South by the Ruvuma and Njombe Regions.
Weather
The region receives rain twice a year. The autumn rains fall from October to mid-January, and the monsoon rains fall in mid-February and end in late May. Rainfall is between 600 millimeters in the plains and 1,200 millimeters in the highlands. However, there are arid areas that receive less than 600 millimeters of rain a year. These areas include Gairo Divisions in Gairo District, Mamboya in Kilosa District and Ngerengere Division in Morogoro District.
Administration
Morogoro Region administratively is divided into seven Districts which are Morogoro, Mvomero, Kilosa, Kilombero, Ulanga, Malinyi and Gairo Districts.
According to the Local Government Structure the Region has seven District Councils and one Municipal Council and one Ifakara Town Council. District Councils include Kilosa, Gairo, Kilombero, Morogoro, Ulanga, Mvomero and Malinyi. The region has 11 constituencies, 214 wards, 673 villages, 295 localities, 3,452 neighborhoods
Population
According to the results of the 2012 Population and Housing Census, the number of households in Morogoro Region is 489,688 with 2,218,492 people of whom 1,125,190 are women, equivalent to 50.7 percent and men are 1,093,302. equivalent to 49 percent. The average population in the Household is 4: 5
