Courses and Programmes Offered by State University of Zanzibar (SUZA). (SUZA) was established by Act No. 8 of 1999 of the Zanzibar House of Representatives which was then amended by Act No. 11 of 2009, and further re-amended by Act No. 7 of 2016.

Non-degree programmes
- Diploma in Inclusive and Special Needs Education (ISNE): A two-year course that prepares you to work confidently with learners with special needs and embraces an inclusive, learning-friendly environment. It will also prepare you to lead and implement inclusive practices within schools, communities and educational systems.
- Diploma in Physical Education and Sport Science (PESS): A two-year course is for students and professionals who want to combine a passion for physical education and sport with a career as a secondary school educator.
- Diploma in Early Childhood Education (ECE) : A two-year course is for students and professionals who want to pre-primary teachers , ECE specialists and practitioners, as well as those working in child care and those intending to working with children (social worker).
- Diploma in Educational Leadership and Management (DELM): A two- year course for professionals working in educational or school settings which prepares leaders in education to work in schools, units and other relevant settings.
- Diploma in Primary Education (DPE): A two-year course designed to produce teachers with an in-depth understanding of the subject matter, sound pedagogical and professional skills and ability to adapt to the ever-changing Educational needs in Zanzibar. Its focus is on quality instruction and management of primary schools with the aim of improving the competency of primary school teachers in instruction and managerial skills which is presently largely lacking in schools.
- Diploma in Science with Education (Two Years): a two year course designed to prepare a student to develop sufficient mastery of subject matter and competence in two teaching subjects as well as in pedagogy. Students admitted into this programme shall select two major science subjects of their choice. This diploma prepares professional teachers who can teach at Ordinary Secondary School levels both in public and private schools. Students admitted in a two year diploma should have a background in science subjects at Advanced Secondary school education.
- Diploma in Science with Education (Three Years): a three year course designed to prepare a student to develop sufficient mastery of subject matter and competence in two teaching subjects as well as in pedagogy. Students admitted into this programme starts with a one year foundational course before joining with two years diploma programmes, which equip the students with science subjects, computer and academic skills. This diploma prepares professional teachers who can teach at Ordinary Secondary School levels both in public and private schools. Students to be admitted in a three year diploma normally have a background in science subjects at ordinary secondary school education.

Professional courses are designed to prepare qualified teachers, who will be competent in teaching core academic subjects at secondary school setting. The courses allow prospective teachers to learn subjects of interests and give them a taste of teaching career. Department of Kiswahili
The Department of Kiswahili is responsible for the teaching of Kiswahili at Diploma and degree levels. In addition, the department undertakes research in Kiswahili and helps for both local and foreign students wishing to pursue researches in Kiswahili also the Department supervises students’ researches.
Department of Foreign Languages
The Department of Foreign Languages of the State University of Zanzibar offers a wide range of programmes on foreign languages and linguistics, both in Diploma and Degree levels.
This Department teaches seven foreign languages at Diploma level in the Diploma of Languages with Edu- cation, these include English, French, German, Arabic, Portuguese, Chinese and Spanish; and this makes SUZA through its Department of Foreign Languages to be the leading institute in East Africa in providing many foreign languages.
Apart from English language which is compulsory for all Diploma in Languages with Education students, each student is required to choose another foreign language. At undergraduate level, the Department teaches English and Linguistics.
Department of Kiswahili for Foreigners
Courses and Programmes Offered by State University of Zanzibar (SUZA)
The activities of the Department of Kiswahili for Foreigners were initially embedded in the former Institute of Kiswahili and Foreign Languages, better known as TAKILUKI which was established in 1979. Following the University restructuring process; the new Department of Kiswahili for Foreigners has been established to teach Kiswahili programmes for foreigners. The Department is located in the heart of the Stone Town of Zanzibar.
The Department has been rapidly growing in terms of the programmes, teaching methods, instructional materials and qualified academic staff. The State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) aims at making the Department of Kiswahili for Foreigners the preferred centre for learning Kiswahili worldwide.
Objectives
The department has the following objectives:
- To teach, promote and spread Kiswahili within and outside the country.
- To teach Kiswahili to foreigners.
- To co-operate with other institutes sharing similar objectives and functions from within and outside the country.

Kiswahili Course for Beginners
Course Code: KBL – 11
In this level the Department provides basic instruction on how to greet people at different times and at different levels of social status, preparing students for simple conversations in an authentic manner. In addition to that it offers other basic language skills such as speaking, writing, listening and reading; within those areas, grammar is introduced throughout.
The Department also integrates the student with Swahili culture and values. It directs the student to use the language in real situations so that the student builds self-confidence in using the language in a variety of different contexts.
Finally, the Department develops the student’s communicative writing skills. It encourages the student to be independent by participating in conversations with a variety of Swahili speakers and interacting with people in different contexts.
The students are supplied with a textbook – ZUNGUMZA KISWAHILI Hatua ya Kwanza.
Duration: four weeks.
Kiswahili for Intermediate Learners’ Course
Course Code: KIL – 20
At the intermediate level, the course is designed for the students to learn language through the environment, and to learn grammar through context. Also, content is integrated with the language. This level provides various reading, listening and writing skills to those who have a fair amount of knowledge of the language. This will help the students to immerse the Swahili language community.
The Department of Kiswahili for Foreigners designs the course to engage the student in functional usage of the language for meaningful purpose, developing appropriate strategies for initiating conversation, giving and receiving directions, asking and responding, reading passages and enabling him/her to give simple opinions.
The Department’s focus is to engage the student in full participation in academic, social and work contexts in Swahili. It is designed to enable the student to evaluate ideas and responses.
Duration: four weeks.
Kiswahili for Advanced Learners’ Course
Course Code: KAL – 30
At this level the Department of Kiswahili for Foreigners develops listening skills. Through different books, this level is designed for the student to expand vocabulary and to evaluate and analyze the Swahili language in different situations and purposes.
It also directs the students to identify the main ideas, discuss and present them through Swahili language.
Duration: four weeks.
Kiswahili Literature
Course Code: KLT – 40
The course has a core syllabus and a variable component which takes into account the needs of the participants. The minimum time for the course is two weeks (40 hours). All the texts required may be purchased from the Department. The Department also has a well-stocked class library.
Kiswahili for Tourists
Course Code: KFT – 11
This is only a one-week course that is provided for tourists who visit the Zanzibar islands just for few days. It is intended to help them to communicate with local people. The Department provides the basic language needed for greetings, buying and asking directions.

Apart from the courses mentioned above, the department is flexible to offer special programmes according to the needs and interest of the learners.

In addition to scheduled programmes across the calendar year, the Department recognizes the need of various institutions for programmes that are offered to a specific group of students coming from the same institution.
Programme Calendar
The programme is offered throughout the year but the Department’s preferences are to commence the programme on the first week of a month during working days for individual students.
Admission is also done for those wishing to carry out their studies in other periods of a month but their schedule will begin in the afternoon.
Class Hours
Morning class starts from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm.
Afternoon class starts from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

The programme aims to provide technical competence in animal health and production for self- employment in the livestock sector. In this case, employees will be able to use the skills efficiently in carrying out livestock disease control, meat quality assurance and increased productivity of animals in their work places.

Bachelor of Science in Agriculture General
The Programme is intended to produce competent graduates who are able to integrate agricultural components in farming systems to identify farmers’ problem and to produce viable technical solutions in the framework of the available resources. The graduates are expected to be conversant with different types of agricultural industries, from the smallholder farmers, cooperative unions to large scale production both in the field and in /greenhouses. Moreover, the graduates are expected to master skills on marketing of agricultural products as well as planning, organization, management and administration of agricultural enterprises. Graduates are highly expected to be self-employed.
- Admission for the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture General requires Two Principal passes (4 points) in Biology/Botany and Chemistry/Physics/ Mathematics/Science and Practice in Agriculture at A- level certificate OR Diploma with a GPA of not less than 3.0 in Agriculture or related fields and FOUR passes in relevant science subjects including biology at O-level certificate
