Diploma Courses
Diploma in Health Laboratory Sciences
The establishment of a Diploma program in Health Laboratory Sciences at KCMU College is intended to raise the number of well-trained Laboratory Technologists that are in great demand to fill in various positions at the different levels of public health care and research system.
The graduates are expected to be competent enough for starting and running private laboratory services to complement the efforts of the government to provide quality laboratory services all over the country. As a side benefit, the program will produce graduates who are potential applicants to enroll for BSc in Health Laboratory Science Programmes that are currently being conducted at the KCMU College and MUHAS.
Course Content
The course shall be conducted on a semester basis. There will be two semesters for each academic year. The subjects to be studied shall be divided into introductory subjects, which will be taught during the 1st year, while principal subjects will be taught during the 2nd year and 3rd years.
During the third year, the student will do a fieldwork attachment to a Zonal or Regional reference laboratory and write a report.
There will be departmental rotations covering the principal subjects of microbiology and immunology, biochemistry, hematology, blood transfusion, parasitology, and psychopathology during the second and third years
Direct Entry
Holders of Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) with four (4) Passes in non-religious Subjects including two (2) credit “C” Passes in Chemistry and Biology and “D” in Physics, a Pass in English Language and Basic Mathematics is an added advantage.
Equivalent Entry
Holders of Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) with one (1) credit and two (2) passes in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Basic Mathematics.
A certificate in Medical Laboratory Assistant trained through knowledge-based Curriculum and successful passed bridging program (NTA level 5 semester 1 module).
Diploma in Occupational Therapy
This course is administratively part of the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical College of Tumaini University and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare providing staff and student’s sponsorship. The school was set up under the auspices of the Tanzania Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, WHO, Good Samaritan Foundation (GSF), DSE, APSO, Skillshare International and VSO in 1998.
Occupational Therapy helps people with disabilities to regain independence. Occupational therapists are health professionals who provide skills and practical solutions for people who have a physical or mental disability which is either short term or long term.
Undergraduate Programmes
Doctor Of Medicine
Taking into consideration that Medicine is a caring humanitarian profession, the MD curriculum has been designed in such manner that a graduate physician would demonstrate problem-solving capacity (professional reasoning), associated with clearly identifiable professional attitudes, combined with a range of psychomotor abilities (professional skills) and carry with him/her an integrated information base (professional knowledge).
The objectives of the College include among others:
- To produce medical graduates equipped with the highest possible standard of practical and intellectual skills well suited to the needs of present and future Tanzania society.
- To produce medical graduates who are motivated to adapt to rapid changes in the medical practice brought about by new technology and to cope with ever-expanding research and vast literature.
- To train graduates who can show understanding of the ethical basis of medical practice and be able to identify social-cultural, psychological and economic factors that influence the health of the individual, family, and community.
- To train graduates who can show the ability to communicate with individuals, families and the community. As a member of the health team, the graduate should be able to establish interprofessional and inter-sectoral relations to achieve prescribed goals.
- A graduate of the College should be sensitive and responsive to community health needs by being able to plan, organize, coordinate and evaluate the health needs of individuals, families and the community as well as being capable of implementing primary health care strategy for the community.

BSc in Health Laboratory
The introduction of an undergraduate course for health laboratory scientists into our health care system aims at developing good practical, analytical and transferable skills applicable to a wide range of employment opportunities such as pharmaceutical research, pathology, and diagnosis as well as clinical trials. This will greatly improve the quality of laboratory services both medical and research oriented.
This course aspires to educate qualified, responsible and reflective professionals for work in health laboratories. The graduates of this course will be in a position of specialization in health laboratory sciences combined with the ability to work independently hence having a great input in the current health laboratory system in our country.
BSc of Science in Nursing
The Faculty of Nursing offers a three-year undergraduate program leading to the award of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSc. N) degree of Tumaini University. The program aims at educating nurses and midwives who have already undergone a basic training program in Nursing Midwifery and Psychiatry it is designed to educate and produce nurses who will be able to address the contemporary and future needs of Tanzanians.
Overall Program Objectives
- The graduate nurse will be equipped to work within the health care system and his/her roles will be to:
- Engage in professional nursing practice, utilizing a recognized nursing philosophy.
- Utilize the nursing process effectively in the delivery of health care services to all clients across their life-span and all settings.

BSc of Science in Prosthetics & Orthotics
The course which runs under the faculty of Rehabilitation is a 4-year program (for direct entrants) and 3 years for entrants under the equivalent qualifications.
Graduates of the course are expected to have professional competence in clinical practice in Prosthetics and Orthotics Science by offering a broad range of subjects that include Physical and Clinical assessment and examination of patients with neuro-muscular-skeletal deficiencies. This also includes prescription and design of component, fabrication, delivery and follow up of orthopedic appliances.
The broad objectives of the B.Sc. Degree course in Prosthetics and Orthotics are among others:
- To produce Prosthetists/Orthotists who are equipped with practical skills and knowledge suited to the needs of the physically disabled population within and outside Tanzania.
- To produce Prosthetists/Orthotists who have the knowledge, skills, and attitude of facing the challenges in the rapid advancement of science and technology and adapting it to suit the respective environmental, social, cultural and economic conditions.
- To produce Prosthetists/Orthotists who are equipped with the practical skills and knowledge required in developing designs and fabrication procedures of Orthopaedic appliances suitable for different types of disabilities.
- To Produce Prosthetists/Orthotists who can research the available resources to improve the quality, service delivery, and Community Based Rehabilitation.
- To produce Prosthetists/Orthotists who are motivated and capable of carrying out training and education activities in technical Orthopaedics.
- To produce individuals who can show understanding of the professional ethics and be able to appreciate the individual social, cultural, psychological and economic factors which may influence the process of rehabilitation.
- To produce Prosthetist/Orthotist who are capable of managing, coordinating and supervising the activities of the technical staff, i.e. Orthopaedic Technologists, Orthopaedic Technicians, Bench Workers, and other auxiliary Technicians.
BSc in Physiotherapy
This course runs under the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine for four (4) years for both direct and equivalent entrants.
Graduates from this program are expected to have high Physiotherapy professional competence in clinical practice to raise the standards of health care services.
The candidates with a diploma in physiotherapy will combine year two and year three contents during their second year and complete the course in 3 years.
Theory hours shall include lectures, discussion seminars, and tutorials. Practical hours shall include practical demonstrations in the physiotherapy laboratory and Gymnasium, clinical bedside teaching and supervised clinical practice within the hospital and in the rehabilitation centers.
Specific Objectives
- The program aims to produce graduate physiotherapists enabled to:
- Promote the health and social well being of individuals and groups through evidence-based practices towards the assessment, treatment, and evaluation of physiotherapy interventions.
- Provide physiotherapy services according to individual needs

BSc in Optometry
Optometry is a profession concerning vision, the practice of which includes the determination and evaluation of the refractive status of the eye. It also includes the detection of the diseases both ocular and systemic and in the selection, design, provision, and adaptation of optical and optically related corrective measures. An Optometrist is a person qualified and authorized to practice optometry in all its aspects.
The profession of optometry is a combination of legal. Educational, practice management, service a delivery and public health initiative that is unique to every country. It based on culture, educational and regulatory frameworks. Optometry is more than just the correction of refractive error. Uncorrected refractive error is the second highest cause of blindness and the main cause of visual impairment globally.
The focus of the program is to qualify Optometrists who are competent, compassionate with a humane and holistic approach towards their patients. The quality of education imparted to the Students is constantly improved by upgrading teaching and learning methods through a continuous process.
Overall Objective
The overall objective of the course is to train competent Optometrists who can provide comprehensive preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative eye health and vision care services, which include refraction, dispensing, detection/diagnosis and management of diseases of the eye, and rehabilitation of conditions of the visual system.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
The curriculum is a full-time semester and program of study with the following major aims and objectives:
The specific objectives of this program shall be able to;
1) Train an Optometrist to acquire knowledge, skills, and attitude to practice as primary eye care professionals
2) Train optometrists who will be able to teach Optometry at a School/college of Optometry, take up further education and do research in the ophthalmic field.
3) Train Optometrists who will independently perform comprehensive clinical eye examination including refraction, and detection of pathological disorders of the eye and related systems.
4) Train Optometrists who will independently prescribe all types of optical corrections including spectacles, contact lenses, low vision aids, vision therapy, and eye exercises.
5) Create an opportunity for Ordinary Diploma holders to upgrade knowledge and skills.
Postgraduate Studies
Doctor Of Philosophy (PhD)
A 3 – 4 year programme (1 year of extension possible) of research activities, with some added training courses.
Supervisors
Two supervisors will appointed by TUMA, one of them holding a position from TUMA. The second Supervisor may be from another University, either within Tanzania or from outside Tanzania.
Completion of the Thesis:
The candidate provides the manuscript in sufficient copies to be presented to the assessment Committee.
The College will nominate an Assessment Committee of a minimum of 3 people and approved by Tumaini University Makumira Senate.
The Defense:
The defense before an audience to be determined by the individual College.
Approval of the Results
The results of the defence must be sent to the College academic board and then to the TUMA Senate for approval.
Graduation
The candidate will receive his/her degree during the TUMA College graduation day.
Master Of Medicine
The MMed programme at KCMU College is designed for qualified medical practitioners who are strongly motivated towards a specialist career in Medical Sciences and Academic Medicine. Those who graduate in these courses will be expected to augment the national need for specialists in medical disciplines, which will improve the roles expected of Tanzanian Consultant Hospitals in teaching, service and research.

Master of Public Health (MPH)
To encourage a multi disciplinary approach to the problems of public health and to train professionals who will be better able to cope with the continuing process of change and who will act as leaders in initiating and developing these changes.
To provide MPH level training to physicians (e.g.RMOs, DMOs), senior nurses and allied health professionals in Tanzania and other countries, to enable them to implement action orientated intervention programmes, particularly in disease control.
Course Objectives
- To enable students to acquire basic skillsover the wide range of disciplines in public health, to appreciate the contributions made by the different disciplines and to develop the ability to work with multidisciplinary teams.
- To equip students with management skills to enable them to cope with change and to act as leaders for this change.

MSc in Epidemiology & Biostatistics
This course is designed to cover the basic and advanced concepts of epidemiology and many advanced techniques in bio statistics and therefore to train personnel who are able to and competent in analyzing and interpreting data.
The course aims to equip graduates with knowledge in epidemiology and bio statistics and that have latest skills in analytical epidemiology and bio statistics.
MSc Urology
Graduate in MSc Urology will be expected to augment the national need for specialists in urology, which will improve the roles expected of Tanzanian Consultant Hospitals in teaching, service and research.
Objectives
To train an urologist who should be competent enough to work independently in a Regional or District Hospital.
To organize urological programmes for a Region, supervise and teach AMO’s (urology) and conduct independent field surveys.
To acquire knowledge, skills, attitude and ethics associated with the profession of a urologist.
Educational programme
MSc training programmes shall be organised to provide a stable, well coordinated and progressive educational experience for the trainee, rather than simply provide health care to patients. The programme includes

MSc Medical Microbiology, Immunology with Molecular Biology
This programme is intended to provide knowledge, attitudes and skills in understanding the interaction between the human body and the various disease aetiological agents and the application of techniques used in microbiology and immunology, in investigating the functioning of the human body in health and disease. This highly specialized degree is intended to create competencies in highly specialized medical and biomedical fields and scientific attitudes relating to both public and individual health.
MSc in Clinical Research
This is a 2 years course covering the general field of clinical research, including clinical trials particularly in poverty related diseases: malaria, HIV-AIDS and tuberculosis. It consists of coursework and dissertation with a strong component of laboratory hands on skills.
Aim and objectives
To produce qualified scientists in the field of Clinical Research, with adequate scientific knowledge and skills to conduct independent or collaborative research in the interrelated disciplines of clinical research, in particular in carrying out Clinical Trials.
To produce competent candidates who can pursue advanced studies leading to higher education, especially PhD.
To prepare graduates in clinical and biomedical sciences for advanced teaching positions in the relevant subjects.
To provide opportunity and an enabling environment for clinicians and scientists to initiate and implement clinical research, as well as to share their knowledge and skills with other scientists, both nationally and internationally.
