Tanzania’s oldest and most prestigious public university, the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) is located 13 kilometers west of Dar es Salaam, on the observation hill known as Mlimani in Kiswahili, and occupies 1,625 acres.
The University College Dar es Salaam (UCD), a University of London affiliate college, was founded on October 25, 1961. From its inception until 1964, it was temporarily housed in the headquarters of Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) on Lumumba Street in Dar es Salaam.
It started with only one faculty, the Faculty of Law, and 13 students, one of whom was a woman, Julie Manning. It joined the University of East Africa in 1963, along with Makerere University College in Uganda and Nairobi University College in Kenya, as a constituent college. Act No. 12 of 1970 established UDSM as a full-fledged university on July 1, 1970.
