ST. AUGUSTINE UNIVERSITY OF TANZANIA HAS BEEN SELECTED TO HOST CARNEGIE AFRICAN DIASPORA FELLOW MWANZA-TANZANIA,
May, 2017 – St. Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT) was selected by the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program (CADFP) to host an African Diaspora scholar from the United States to work with on a collaborative research; graduate student teaching/mentoring project titled “Modelling and Promoting Research through Mentorship among Graduate Students and Junior Researchers in the Field of Education and Social Sciences”. Dr. Chrispina Lekule, Postgraduate Studies, Research and Consultancy Director at SAUT will lead the project, together with Dr. Richard Mushi, a Fellow from Mississippi Valley State University, Itta Bena, Mississippi, USA. The project will provide both masters students and junior lecturers in the faculty of education with the opportunity to gain expertise and relevant knowledge/skills on research methodology in their field of study. This opportunity will also provide the University through the faculty of Education with the opportunity for a long lasting professional cooperation and partnership in research with the Fellow’s Institution.
We at the St. Augustine University of Tanzania anticipates that this project opportunity will contribute to heightening our postgraduate students and growing scholars skills and ability to conduct empirical research, write scholarly papers and publish in peer reviewed credible journals. The opportunity will also mark the beginning of long term scholarly partnerships which will enrich both the growing scholars at St. Augustine University and Mississippi Valley State University. We also hope to reach official agreements to establish partnerships in areas of faculty and student exchange for the mutual benefit of our two institutions. The St. Augustine University of Tanzania project is one of 43 projects that will pair African Diaspora Scholars with one of 35 higher education institutions and collaborators in Africa to work together on curriculum co-development, research, graduate teaching, training and mentoring activities in the coming months. At SAUT, the visiting Fellow will be involved in graduate teaching and mentoring of our Masters students in the Faculty of Education particularly, those in Education Management and Planning and Master of Higher Education Management and Development.
The Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program, now in its fourth year, is designed to reverse Africa’s brain drain, build capacity at the host institutions, and develop long-term, mutually-beneficial collaborations between universities in Africa and the United States and Canada. It is funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York and managed by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in collaboration with United States International University-Africa (USIU-Africa) in Nairobi, Kenya, which coordinates the activities of the Advisory Council. A total of 282 African Diaspora Fellowships have now been awarded for scholars to travel to Africa since the program’s inception in 2013. Fellowships match host universities with African-born scholars (individually or in small groups) and cover the expenses for project visits of between 14 and 90 days, including transportation, a daily stipend, and the cost of obtaining visas and health insurance.
A total of 282 Fellows have now been selected since the program’s inception in 2013. See full list of 2017 projects, hosts and scholars and their universities.
