University of Dar es salaam, commonly known by the acronym UDSM, is one of the recognized universities in Tanzania. This institution plays an important role in higher education by offering academic and professional training to students from Tanzania and beyond.
University Background
The Institution of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) is Tanzania’s oldest and most prestigious state university. It lies 13 kilometers west of Dar es Salaam, occupying 1,625 acres atop the observation hill known as Mlimani in Kiswahili. On October 25, 1961, it was founded as the University College Dar es Salaam (UCD), an affiliate college of the University of London. It was briefly housed in the premises of the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) in Lumumba Street, Dar es Salaam, from its inception until 1964, when it was relocated to its permanent home on the Hill. The University concept was violated in the TANU Annual General Meeting in 1958. Mr. Amos Kesenge, the then-TANU General Secretary, advocated it. “The people of Tanganyika have a thirst and a hunger for education,” he remarked. Education is the key to the growth of people’s lives in this country, and people with education, knowledge, and wisdom are needed for improved national development.” Members decided that the University should not be involved in party politics and that everyone should contribute in kind and cash. Tanganyika African Newspaper Company Limited began contributing to the construction of this institution by organizing a football match, and all proceeds were deposited in the university basket fund.
