Hubert Kairuki Memorial University, commonly known by the acronym HKMU, is one of the recognized universities in Tanzania. This institution plays an important role in higher education by offering academic and professional training to students from Tanzania and beyond.

University Background

Hubert Kairuki Memorial University (HKMU) was founded in 1997 and was one of the first private institutions in Tanzania to be authorized in 2000. It has since acquired local, regional, and international recognition. Prof Hubert C.M Kairuki and his wife Mrs Kokushubira Kairuki founded the university in response to the situation in Tanzania following independence in 1961, in which sickness, poverty, and illiteracy were deemed the country’s main foes. HKMU University began as Mikocheni International University of Health Sciences (MIUHS), with the goal of meeting the training needs of health professionals in Tanzania and Sub-Saharan Africa. Mikocheni International University was renamed in 1998, anticipating the possibility of developing beyond health studies. Finally, it was in February 1999.the University’s name was changed to Hubert Kairuki Memorial University, in the honour of the founder, Prof Hubert Kairuki, after he passed away.
